Notice that some of the poplar trees have been planted more recently after the original trees did not survive. The original rows of trees were planted by the inmates, probably as a wind break. The trees were originally spaced the exact same distance from each other. The precision layout of this camp served as a model for later Nazi concentration camps. According to accounts written by the Americans who liberated the camp, this was a dirt road when the camp was in operation.
