Picture postcard showing original camp gate in closed position

The first sight that prisoners saw upon their arrival at the Concentration Camp in Dachau was the sign on this closed gate which reads "Arbeit Macht Frei" in German or Work Makes One Free in English. This slogan became a standard feature of the Nazi Concentration Camps and appeared on the gates of later camps, such as the one at Auschwitz in Poland. Note the other sign in front of the west wing of the operations building which indicates that this picture was taken after the camp was turned into a Memorial Site.
