St. Nicholas Church in Mauthausen, Austria   The photo above was taken from the hill where the Church of St. Nicholas stands above the town of Mauthausen. In the background you can see the Danube river; on the right is a round chapel dating back to 1250.   St. Barbara's chapel, which dates back to the middle of the 13th century, stands on the hill above the Danube in Mauthausen. Note the gate to the right, which is shown in the photo below.  Through the doorway, you can see the rooftops of the town of Mauthausen with the Danube river in the background.  This monument to the war dead from Mauthausen stands next to the parish church. This is a sad sight that you will see in every town throughout Germany and Austria, where millions died for their country.
