The Accused in the Malmedy Massace case
U.S. versus Valentin Bersin, et al
75 German Waffen-SS soldiers were charged with war crimes following the Malmedy Massacre during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. One of them, Arvid Freimuth, committed suicide before the proceedings began. The charges were dropped against another of the accused, Marcel Boltz, because he was a French citizen who was recruited into the Waffen-SS after Germany annexed the province of Alsace into Greater Germany in 1940. 73 men of the original 75 were brought before an American Military Tribunal at Dachau in the case of U.S. vs Valentin Bersin et al. The proceedings started on May 12, 1946 and the verdicts were read on July 16, 1946. All 73 of the accused were convicted. Their names are listed below.
